Designer Series - Anna McLaren
Welcome to the second edition of our Designer Series - A celebration of the talented creatives behind the beautiful brands we proudly stock at Sisters & Co.
This instalment shines a spotlight on Anna McLaren, Founder and Designer of A.Emery, known for her refined, minimalist style. Timed with the release of the latest collection, we're excited to share that new A.Emery pieces are now available to preorder.
What led you to found A.Emery?
My first role out of university was with Target, and before that, I interned at The Row in New York. From 2014 to 2017, I worked at Witchery before launching A.Emery. You learn so much working within a large fashion house, and that experience really laid the foundation for starting my own brand.
A.Emery began with just me for the first couple of years. Over time, it’s grown into a globally recognised label with a small but mighty team based in Melbourne.
What is your favourite piece in the collection?
I have a soft spot for our ready-to-wear pieces, especially our suiting. I wear suiting most days, it’s a bit of an unconventional choice, but I love it. Trousers are probably my favourite product. Once you get the fit right, it's such a rewarding category.
How did you refine your signature fit?
We work with incredible pattern makers. I did pattern making myself for many years, though I haven’t touched the tools in a while. These days, we collaborate with Glen Rollason and Scott Bowring in Melbourne, both of whom actually taught me at university and now create patterns for A.Emery. They’re true masters of the pant.
What advice would you give someone wanting to start in the fashion industry?
Learn everything you can, from every part of the process. At Witchery, I was designing fifty pieces a month, which meant constantly working with different fabrics and shapes, and learning what worked and what didn’t. Take it all in, it’s the best way to build your skills and confidence.
